G-Men Prepare In Bailey Case

Eyes of the G-men—the country's most potent force against major crime this week are focused on Columbus and the trial of Reese Bailey, accused cop killer and bank robber and suspected former chief of one of the biggest auto theft rings in the south, scheduled to start in U. S. district court here Thursday

Bailey, who is 30 and has more than 12 years of crime behind him, is charged in federal indictments with murder, bank robbery and interstate transportation of stolen automobiles.

He is described by department of justice agents as one of the most dangerous criminals in the United States today.

The trial opening Thursday, based on an indictment charging Bailey with assaulting federal agents, is the result of a running gun fight between the defendant and G-men near Jackson, O., Nov. 18, in which Bailey was wounded.

Following his arrest at his poultry farm hideout near Jackson, Bailey spent two weeks in the federal reformatory hospital at Chillicothe.

After his recovery, he was brought to Columbus and placed in city prison under constant guard in an "escape-proof" cell.

SLAYING IS CHARGED

Federal indictments against Bailey in the eastern district of Washington charge him with the slaying of Bert Lemley, Rosalia, Wash., policeman, last Aug. 14, during the robbery of the Bank of Rosalia, in which he led a gang that escaped with more than $7,000 in federal reserve currency.

Assistant U. S. District Attorney R. J. O'Donnell last night said orders to try Bailey here first on the comparatively unimportant assault charge came from his superior, Francis C. Kanny, U. S. district attorney at Dayton, who is coming to Columbus to direct the prosecution.

Assuming he is convicted, federal officials said yesterday, Bailey will be sentenced by U. S. District Judge Mel G. Underwood and the department of justice is likely to direct that he be sent to Alcatraz, island prison in San Francisco Bay, where Al Capone and other public enemies are serving time.
