CORNER STONE LAYING.—Yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock the members and friends of Roberts chapel, M. E. Church (colored), assembled on south Washington street to witness the laying of the corner stone. After a suitable sermon by Rev. W. H. McAllister of Trinity M. E. Church, the work of laying the corner stone by the Masons was begun. This ceremony was conducted by the R. W. G. M. of Virginia, John B. Montgomery. The Grand Master of the District of Columbia was present and also delivered an address. After a short address by another visiting Mason, the collection, amounting to $115 was taken and deposited in the stone. Roberts Chapel was sixty years old on the 12th of last May. The site of the present church was purchased from the late Josiah H. Davis for $350. The deed was made to convey the lot to eight trustees—Messrs. Benjamin Waters, John Shackleford, Benoni Wheat and Moses Cawood, white, and Francis Hoy, James Evans, Philip Hamilton and Simon Turley, colored.
