BEDWELL HAS WON MORE THAN $20,000
Grand Junction Horseman Makes Third Largest Winnings for Season on the Famous Emeryville Track
His String Now One of Finest in the Country
That there is money in racing, when you can get the right sort of a stable, has been demonstrated by H. Guy Bedwell, who left this city several years ago with a string of horses to buck up against anything and everything that came along.
The foundation of his success came in the purchase of the great horse, Los Angelino, that has records that place him as one of the greatest race horses on the continent on a long distance run. Since Mr. Bedwell secured Los Angelino, he has added from time to time, whenever he ran across them, some of the best horses racing today. He does not have to watch his opportunity to take down money at small country fairs; but the name of Bedwell is listed in some of the biggest racing events east and west.
For the past year Mr. Bedwell has confined his racing mostly to the Pacific coast and the southern circuit.
For the past three weeks he has been at Emeryville, Cal., one of the greatest racing tracks in the country, where can be found horses from all over America with records that make anyone look wise who knows aught of racing.
The season at Emeryville will close next Saturday, June 6. Two weeks ago Handicapper Nathanson made a compilation of the winnings of the various stables up until that time. The list is headed by S. C. Hildreth, one of the richest stable owners in the country. Their winnings amounted to $30,140. Next in line came the famous Keenes of New York, their winnings amounting to $28,542, and the third at that time, with the close of the season at Emeryville three weeks ahead, was H. G. Bedwell, with $22,867 to his credit.
Thursday the Millbrae handicap of seven furlongs is to be run for a $1,000 purse.
Friday what is known as the Osage handicap, with something over $2,000 hung up for the horses that go to the barrier, will occur; and Saturday the Beresford handicap of 5½ furlongs.
Altogether, it will be seen that Mr. Bedwell is doing something, although his friends have not heard much of him lately.
The clipping from which the above is taken was sent to this city by a prominent citizen, G. H. McCurdy, now in California on a visit.
The many friends of Mr. Bedwell will be much pleased to hear of his success.
