Car Breaks Tree, Tears Out Stump, No One Hurt

EAST GRAND FORKS -- In this age of automobiles when a tree wrecks a car, to paraphrase an old newspaper axiom, that's not news but when a car wrecks a tree well, that's different. And when the occupants of the car receive only a few bruises for their share of the experiment -- well, that's luck. Coming down highway No. 2 at a high rate of speed into the city early Sunday morning, a light enclosed truck driven by a tobacco salesman failed to make the half-turn onto Sibley street and hit a tree on the turn. The tree, a boxelder about a foot in diameter, was snapped off and then the stump was torn out by the roots, the car careening into a flower garden on the Joseph LaBoda property. The driver and a passenger were hurled out and the car badly wrecked. Mr. LaBoda, while bemoaning the damage, felt some consolation in the fact that the stump was cleanly taken out.
