The policy of the opposition presses in the Gubernatorial canvass seems to be the game of brag, and a disposition on the part of a few, (for there cannot be many) to underrate the talents of Mr. Wise. This is, at best, but a poor business, and shows how hard such persons are run for argument. Very different is the estimate placed upon his ability by some of the ablest men of the Union: as for instance, Gov. Bright, the President of the U. S. Senate, Senators Hunter, Mason, of Va., Dodge of Iowa, and many members of Congress, who were in Alexandria on the 4th inst., when Mr. Wise spoke in that city.
A correspondent of the Alexandria Sentinel, says:
In the opinion of the distinguished men present it was a masterly and powerful effort, bold, fearless and defiant to Virginia's enemies, and the enemies of the Constitution and the Union. That Mr. Wise will be the next Governor of Virginia I do not for a moment doubt. Every vote cast against him is a vote in favor of Gardiner, Wilson, Hale, Giddings and Seward, a vote in favor of Know-Nothingism, abolitionism, and Deism. I heard a whig present, declare most emphatically, that Mr. Wise had convinced him that the Know-Nothings of the North were abolitionists, and that he should vote for Mr. Wise."
Now from evidence such as this, one would suppose the bragging ought to be with Mr. Wise's friends, but they can wait until after the election. Weston Herald
