Barkley Clan
10th Reunion
Gastonia

Charles Barkley, of Huntersville, Elected President;
150 Members Present
(Gastonia Gazette)

With about 150 present, the tenth Barkley Historical Association, was held Wednesday at Karyae Park on the Linwood road.

The meeting, a family reunion held each year in honor of the memory of the late Robert Barkley, began at 10:30 a. m. and ended with a bountiful picnic dinner on the Karyae Park Pavilion.

Charles Barkley, of Huntersville, was elected president of the association for the new year, with other officers as follows: W. H. Barkley, of Morganton, executive chairman; Miss Lois Barkley, of Statesville, secretary (re-elected); and Ed Barkley, of the Hopewell community in Mecklenburg county, honorary chairman.

It was voted to hold the 11th annual meeting next summer at Unity Presbyterian church in Lincoln county, where the remains of Robert Barkley, whom the association honors, lies buried, and where a monument has been erected in his memory by the association.

Members of the Barkley clan from North and South Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee were in attendance at the meeting here Wednesday.

In addition to the reading of family historical notes and introduction of the Barkley kindred, the program of the day featured addresses by Rev. J. S. Hiatt, presiding elder of the Gastonia Methodist district; Wade H. Sanders, Gastonia attorney; Mayor Emery B. Denny; Rev. W. Earl Armstrong; George W. Barkley, the latter of Winston Salem and others.

Charley Barkley, of Gastonia, retiring executive chairman, was in charge of the arrangements and program for the tenth annual meeting, and was assisted by R. S. Barkley, of Gastonia, in carrying out the day's plans. J. A. W. Barkley, of Statesville, retiring president, presided at the meeting.

for the use of Karyae Park.
The meeting was characterized as the most delightful in the entire history of the association.
A message was read from Senator Alvin Barkley of Kentucky in which he expressed regret at being unable to attend the meeting due to pressing business in Washington.
Cameron Morrison and C. A. Jonas, honorary members of the association, likewise wired their regrets at being unable to attend due to previous engagements.
The association passed the following resolution, reprinted here in full:
"1. The Barkley clan resolves that America, viewed from the various angles of the past, occupies the distinction of being the greatest nation on earth. For reasons that its citizenship is largely patriotic, honest, God-fearing, religious people. And this clan admonishes the fathers and mothers to balance their budget on these fundamentals. And in this connection, we call on the homes and firesides, together with the churches and so-called Christian institutions of training, to rededicate to the sincerity of their fathers. We deplore the hypocrisy, deceit, deception and mockery perpetuated and practiced in disguise today under the banner of religion. We condemn the flipping and jesting of many of the attaches of church and so-called Christian institutions in that they are shadowing the disobeyance of law and following the alien spirits which are un-American and have nothing in common with our section of this nation.
"2. In the past, at home and abroad, America could point with pride to the things this government has stood for under the wise and God-fearing leadership of such men as Andrew Jackson, Thomas Jefferson, Lee and Grant, Lincoln and Cleveland, as well as the many lesser lights. We admonish the American people to rededicate themselves to the flag, to the constitution and to cling to the fundamental principles of government that have builded America a great nation. We deplore any and all un-American spirits abroad in our land-whether they be governmental or religious. The Barkley clan takes courage in what a great American said: "The American people are much alike from one end of the nation to the other. On their death-beds religiously, they turn to God. And on their death-beds governmentally, they turn to the spirits and faiths of their fathers."
"3. We believe in free speech and a free press. We deplore the inconsistency of the press in betraying some of the time honored ideals of American government. We condemn the racket of the press in condemning wrong one day and apologizing the next.
"4. We believe in the sovereign rights of the states and in individualism and do adhere to the principles of Jefferson and Lincoln on local self-government. We rededicate this clan to the principle of individualism and individual responsibility. We believe in business in government-and not government in business.
"5. We deplore the propaganda, racketeering ideas that are abroad in the land and unfortunately saturating men and women in public affairs, as well as some times in church. Unfortunately, we are living in a day when some men and women of public trust find it necessary to be common liquor drinkers and common cussers in order that they may be popular. Again we consistently deplore these liabilities to our citizenship and as in the beginning ask a re-establishment of the faith of our fathers."
