Schools in Alaska, as well as in the States, where activities of the federal government have caused serious financial burdens on the school districts concerned, will receive financial aid through a bill signed by President Truman last week.
The law continues for an additional year a program which has been in effect for several years whereby federal monetary aid for the maintenance and operation of school facilities has been given to schools overburdened with war-incurred enrollments.
The law, however, just enacted is broader than previous laws inasmuch as it extends aid to schools burdened by federal activities. Federal assistance is limited to the amount of the actual deficit in the school's maintenance and operation budget during the year. The program will be put into effect just as soon as Congress appropriates the authorized $7,500,000.
During the 1949 fiscal year the Anchorage and Fairbanks school districts received financial assistance under the program with $42,819 allotted to Anchorage and $8,797 to Fairbanks.
