Yesterday the Legislature passed "An act to incorporate Samuel Blodget, esq. and others his associates, with the exclusive right and privilege of cutting a Canal by Amoskeag Falls, on Merrimack River, and locking the same." By this generous act, the Legislature have done themselves much honor; it is liberal to the proprietors, but ten times more so to the public; for it opens an extensive country, abounding with stately masts, spars, white oaks, and all kinds of lumber. This Canal is nearly finished through which an easy and cheap conveyance may be had to the waters at Newbury-Port and Boston; and thus enhance the value of lands on Merrimack River, in a short time, to millions of dollars.
