Hayes' Title.
[Perry County (Mo.) Democrat.]
Now let Congress do its duty, investigate, and then declare that Tilden and not Hayes was duly elected, and the people will see that the one goes in and the other gets out of the White House speedily.
[Plymouth (Mass.) Free Press.]
After the revelations that have come to light during the past week in relation to the damnable presidential frauds in Florida, we very much doubt the sincerity of any Democrat or the honesty of any Republican who will not now admit that Hayes is occupying a fraudulent seat, and deem it a duty to use their influence to oust him from that position.
[Philadelphia Chronicle-Herald]
It will not do to say that the men who make these allegations, being participants in the wrong themselves, are unworthy of belief. Conceding everything that can be said in that direction, there cannot be urged a single substantial reason why the investigation should not be ordered and prosecuted to the fullest possible extent. Such a course is due the country. Every hour intensifies the popular feeling on the subject. It is not a matter of party, but one of justice—justice to Hayes, justice to Tilden; but, above and beyond all, justice to the institutions of the country, whose foundations have been undermined by these hideous frauds, and whose very existence has been imperilled.
[Lewistown (Me.) True Democrat.]
It is idle to say the country wants peace. There can be no peace while the representative of a great fraud remains in the presidential chair. The American people are not used to being governed by fraud or trickery. They have been taught to cheerfully submit to the will of the majority, as from time to time expressed at the ballot boxes; but they are not willing to submit to the overthrow of that will by fabricated returns and chicanery. Every good citizen, irrespective of party, demands fair elections, and honest obedience to results thus obtained; nor will any true patriot, under a republican form of government, submit to less. Hence it is that the masses of the people demand an investigation, with a view to establish beyond peradventure Mr. Hayes' title to the Presidency, if that be possible, or else securing his ejectment, in order that the rightful owner of the place may be installed.
We are glad to observe that the leading journals in the large cities, which, with the single exception of the Sun, have heretofore studiously frowned down all attempts to inquire into the legitimacy of Hayes' title, are now beginning to show signs of returning reason, as well as of returning patriotism.
