The Village of Beloit is doubtless one of the most flourishing and enterprising in the interior of the Territory situate as it is, on one of the most beautiful rivers on this side of the Mississippi: (the Rock,) and surrounded by a region of country of extreme fertility, it can but become a place of great inland trade and importance. The hydraulic power at Beloit, is probably unsurpassed by any in the southern portion of the Territory. The improvement of the water power, will be commenced the present year on an extensive scale. The village has nearly doubled the number of its inhabitants during the last year. In June, 1840, Beloit contained 250 inhabitants—in June, 1841, the number was 450. The present population is probably about 530. There are in the village four organized churches—Congregationalist, Baptist, Episcopal and Methodist. each of which are in a prosperous condition. The town enjoys a respectable reputation for intelligence and correct morals—the inhabitants are proverbially a "church going" people; nearly one half of whom are members of the different denominations above mentioned. The village has two high or select schools—one for young ladies, the other for young gentlemen. The number of buildings erected the present season, including those commenced, and which will be completed the coming fall is over forty; most of which are of respectable size, and display considerable taste and neatness.
