Full Text

Extract of a Letter from Chatham, Nov. 28.

"We have been greatly alarmed here for these ten days past, on account of the extraordinary vigilance of all the Officers in their several departments; and we hear the same strict attention is paid to the yards at Portsmouth and Plymouth.

We are now informed, that this necessary caution has been taken, on account of some undoubted intelligence, that some evil design was meditating to be executed in the dark nights, particularly here and the two abovementioned places; and if success attend their plan, it would render it impossible for us to have a respectable navy for some years. If this be true, and every thing here confirms it, it shews what a confidence is put in the professions of sincere friendship and good Faith of our late enemies, and their good intentions of preserving the peace we have so lately given them."
