ARISTOCRACY.
The Editor of the National Gazette in noticing the result of the election of Mayor of New York says, "that the anti-Jackson party is much the largest among those citizens who possess the right of suffrage; and that this party preponderates greatly in political intelligence, and substance, whether of property or personal repute. Unbounded credit is due to the great body of the merchants, tradesmen, mechanics and learned professions, who pursued the contest with so much zeal and intrepidity."
Here is the true spirit of aristocracy displayed The anti-Jackson party is the largest"not in point of numbers, for their candidate was defeated; but then the party preponderates "in political intelligence and substance, whether of property or personal repute." That is as to say that a poor man, and the farmers who have little substance in point of wealth, and are unable to dress in ruffled shirts and silk stockings, ought not to possess the right of suffrage. This is the true doctrine of whigism in England, a designation which the Bank men have assumed for themselves; but it is at war with the principles of republicanism, and the institutions of our country, which declare that "all men are born free and equal," that a poor man's vote is as good as that of the man who rolls in wealth and riots in luxury. Indeed, it is upon the poor man that the country must depend for its defence in war, and its prosperity in peace. While some of those who now claim the appellation of whigs, are known to have "gone forty miles from tide water"during the war with great Britain, those who are denominated tories by them, were found fighting the battles of their country, and defending the homes and firesides of the skulking men of "substance, whether of property or of personal repute"
