The meagre support given this gentleman at the democratic caucus in Washington, is a confirmation of what has ever been asserted that the leading gentlemen of that party disapproved not less than their opponents, the extravagance and violence of his speeches, messages and measures Indeed they made no secret of their astonishment and censure of such "bold words, and black'd with deeds so bold" It is not, however, so much a rebuke to Mr. Gerry as it is to the upstart politicians who persuaded him to surrender his better judgment to their guidance Mr. Gerry is naturally a gentleman, and though vain and irritable, we hope is not implacable and malicious; though his libel message bears strong marks of both. Evil Counsellors, perhaps, and not bad disposition have been his ruin. It is not likely that of his own mere motion he was induced to wage war upon one half of the people of the Commonwealth; but being push'd down hill, by a force which he ought to have resisted and despised, he made post haste until he came to the valley While therefore the southern democrats mock at New England, by nominating as candidates, gentlemen who have past the period of active exertion, and who probably will not live to the end of their official term ; they manifest a supreme contempt for their partizans in Massachusetts ! and reprove them for their folly and violence, in a mode which we hope may operate as a salutary chastisement Centinel
