PORTSMOUTH.

By one Mr. Morse who left Caco Bay last Tuesday Morning, and came next Day with a Number of Letters to Gentlemen in this Town, we are inform'd, That a Vessel from the West Indies in 18 Days arrived there the Evening before he came away, the Master whereof told him that Guadaloupe was certainly taken, and the Inhabitants had fled into the Mountains; but when he came away great Numbers were daily coming in and surrendering themselves. And Letters in the said Vessel from Antigua say, that their whole Thoughts are turned on this GRAND EXPEDITION.
And by a Letter from a Gentleman in St. Martins to his Friend in this Town, dated January 29th and which came in the above Vessel, is the following Paragraph -- "Our Fleet is at Guadaloupe, and we hear has taken the principal Harbour of said Island, and by all Likelihood will take it all, and Martinico too."-
Kittery. Feb. 28. By Mr. David Strout from Falmouth, we are inform'd, that on Saturday last a Vessel belonging to Cape Ann, arrived at Falmouth in Caco-Bay in 18 Days from the West-Indies, by which we hear that the English Forces have taken Guadaloupe, that no great Difficulty was in taking it, the Inhabitants fled to the Mountains, but are daily coming in and submitting.--That the French had fitted out a Fleet to follow the English and were met with by an English Fleet, Admiral Saunders, off Cape Finisterre, and destroyed by the English Fleet. The News came to the West Indies before this Vessel came away.
