BATON ROUGE, SEPT. 20, 1856.
What does It Mean!
On the banks of the "classic Mississippi" hard by the upper saw-mill-- within the jurisdiction of Wharf Master Coxe, a regular sea going vessel has been pulled out of the stream and elevated in a dry dock for painting and repairs. Madame Rumor has looked at it, has set the public mind to speculating on the subject and guessing, as to what is the object of this silent movement. "Is it to be a voyage of discovery and conquest to the East?" In the Free State, back of us, to be invaded by the Tickfaw of Tchefuncta, and that remote country revolutionized? If so, the neutrality laws will be violated, and General Pierce should be apprised of the fact, that he may send out one of the tightly rigged revenue cutters. A gentleman who is not a professional Know Nothing, but who is a good hand to guess, when he has some grounds for guessing--throws out a dark hint-like a stray ray of light from an obscure lantern, that the vessel aforesaid, is to be drawn through the streets of this city, on the night of the 1st prox., by an ample and sufficient team, with thirty-one of Red Stick's lovely daughters on her deck, to represent in this beautiful manner, the glorious old ship of State, that has rode onward and upward to the present eventful hour. On the night in question, it is the purpose of the American Party, to have a torch light procession. Col. Preston Pond-that eloquent champion of American principles, will address the citizens of East Baton Rouge, at that time.
