SEEING and SAYING
By WILLIAM A. FOWLKES
Managing Editor, Atlanta Daily World
Never Was . . . Never Will Be
SOMETIMES GEMS fall from strange places, and one should ever be watchful to pick them up.
Georgia's Attorney General Eugene Cook was quoted last week as warning a joint session of the State Youth Legislature that people who expect to be ignorant and free expect what never was and never will be.
Although Mr. Cook was addressing an assemblage of all-white youth from the hills and dales of Georgia, his message and the full import of it must be taken for all Georgia boys and girls and by them.
IT IS STILL distressing to meet youth who speak the language of their native land poorly, and who cannot communicate intelligently on the passing times, because of illiteracy and ignorance.
Whether or not their continuing affliction be because of design of section, family condition and background, joblessness, shiftlessness, or any other cause, they and their people would do well to turn an ear to meaningful warnings, regardless of the source.
They cannot be both ignorant and free!
NOW, BROTHER COOK has not always been known to give out such gloriously inspiring advice, because-as he said, he has been in politics for 30 years. During that time, much water has passed under the dam, a considerable amount of Georgia Statehouse maneuvering opposed to minority ambition in the State.
And, although this warning to Negro youth comes by indirection, since they are not a part of the Assembly which convened last week, I hope they heed it. I also pray they continue to reach way down into the "sticks" of the state and raise up their kind to a new level of opportunity and performance.
IGNORANCE is the worst curse of mankind! Continuing with it, any race of people can keep itself in servitude and disadvantage.
