Of This And That
By Betha Digree
A vacation is wonderful... even tho one must attend a few meetings (fortunately ours proved interesting)... It can be especially nice when there are such thoughtful hosts and hostesses as those the Alaska members of the Associated Press had while in Anchorage over the weekend...
Cocktail parties... dinners... sightseeing... brunch... corsages... tennis matches... transportation... and, above, courtesy and friendliness... Nice, too, to have a comfortable hotel room ... breakfast in bed... three inch thick steaks that have been broiled to perfection... downtown streets all paved... Of course, the traffic lights are a problem at first... one forgets them... The U S Air Force and the U. S. Army contributed a great deal toward the education and entertainment of the visitors ... Jet scrambles... helicopter rides... inspection of Radar and Nike installations... a demonstration of weapons power... briefings that gave a deeper understanding of our defense system, and the feeling that the armed forces are doing everything possible to safeguard our country, our homes and families... More citizens should watch these men at work... realize their problems ... and be extremely grateful that they are alert and ready to defend the country...
Many former Kodiak residents are now living in Anchorage... saw Aline La Lande, who asked us to say her reason for not having written friends here is because she has been ill since leaving... she is now feeling much better, and Max, too. is well... Met Marion Howe and his family on the street... chatted a few minutes ... Saw Bud and Nita Metzgar at the airport... they both said they are homesick for Kodiak... Whitney Miller is buyer for the Westward Hotel Chart Room and Grill ... Doris Tegstrom phoned... Talked to Pearl Wallis, who is still enthused over fishing. and beachcombing... they all sent regards to their friends here...
Our one regret was that it all had to end so soon....
