On Thursday last the following address was presented to his Excellency the Governor, by the Mayor and Aldermen of this corporation.

SIR,

IT is with singular pleasure that we the Mayor and Aldermen of Norfolk, embrace the opportunity which your acceptable visit gives us of welcoming you to this borough. While we exert ourselves to promote peace and order, we beg your aid in discharging the duties of our office. Long may you enjoy your health and be happy in your station.

To which he returned the following answer:

GENTLEMEN,

TO appear indifferent to this flattering mark of your politeness and attention, would be assuming an affectation, of which, I hope, never to be accused as an individual; it merits and experiences my highest sense of obligation and gratitude.

In pursuance, however, of those genuine principles of democracy, which can alone maintain the dignity and secure the happiness of man, permit me to avail myself of this (first) opportunity of expressing a wish, that the servants of the commonwealth, in the performance of the duties of their several offices, should not be induced to expect such honorable instances of public attention, unless they are occasioned by particular and signal services.

Your official exertions, gentlemen, entitle you to much commendation, and I beg you will rest assured of my most ready and active co-operation with you, on every occasion, in your laudable and necessary efforts to promote and maintain peace and order—and accept of my earnest wishes for the prosperity and happiness of your flourishing and patriotic borough,

ROBERT BROOKE.

To the Mayor and Aldermen of the borough of Norfolk.
