disunited Europe.
"I am convinced," said the King, "that our people will
unanimously adhere to the basic
ideas of justice in the work toward
national reconciliation and peace,
ideas which must inspire the League
if it is to endure and advance."
The opening of the Riksdag was
characterized by the traditional pomp
and ceremony. The King sat on his
throne partly wrapped in royal
ermine, with the Crown Prince, Gus-
tav Adolf, at his right and Prince
William at his left. Behind them on
the dais were other members of the
royal family, staff officers of the
army and navy, and members of the
court in resplendent uniforms and
decorations. Prime Minister Branting
and the members of his cabinet,
all social-Democrats, were present.
The galleries were occupied by the
diplomatic corps, guests, and ladies.
One of the gratifying announce-
ments of the King was that, by a
careful revision of the budget, the
need of imposing increased taxes
had been avoided.
The total appropriations called for
or about $2,000,000 amount to
which is 200,000,000 crowns less
than the appropriations for the
budget year.
A reduction of 15,000,000 crowns in
the military and naval expenditures
as compared with last year, is
one of the new economies.
The added appropriations to government salaries compensate for the rise in the cost of living during and after the war and will be decreased by 10,000,000 crowns.
