Nye Wins Award For War Expose

Newman Foundation Honors N. Discusses Movies

Champaign, Ill., Jan. 14.-(AP)- U. S. Senator Gerald P. Nye of North Dakota was announced Tuesday as winner of the Cardinal Newman award for 1935 for his "courage and insight' in exposing "the hidden factors which make for war."

The honor, established as a recognition for "outstanding contributions to the enrichment of human life in science. literature, art, humanitarian-ism and government," will be conferred within a month at a public convention at the Newman Foundation of the University of Illinois,

Senator Nye's "distinguished contribution to world peace" won him the award, Dr. John A. O'Brien, director of the Newman foundation, said.

Recounts Arms Probe

Announcement of the citation recounted the senator's "penetrating investigation of the munitions industry, his sponsorship of neutrality legislation for the United States. and his investigations of the influences of financial factors in drawing this country into the world war."

The citation referred to the North Dakota Republican as "a refreshing example of a public servant who penetrates beyond current shibboleths and party labels and brings before the eyes of the great masses of our citizens the hidden factors which make for war and menace the peace of the world."

Has Talked Realities

"Instead of engaging in innocuous and trite platitudes, Senator Nye has talked realities and has laid bare conditions which demand a remedy, and has worked with courage and insight for the enactment of remedial legislation," the citation concluded.

"In placing the public welfare, social justice and world peace above party affiliation, he has presented to the youth of America a refreshing and inspiring ideal."

One other great peace advocate has received the Newman award: Frank B. Kellogg, former secretary of state and co-author of the Kellogg-Briand peace pact.

Other recipients of the honor since it was established in 1928 were U. S. Senator George Norris of Nebraska, in recognition of his sponsorship of labor legislation; and Dr. Robert Andrews Millikan, of the California Institute of Technology. for his contribution to the field of subatomic physics.
