Rattlers To Receive Scott Memorial Trophy

ATLANTA, Ga.—The 100% Wrong Club has named the "Rattlers" of Florida A & M University, Tallahassee, the recipients of the W. A. Scott, II, Memorial Trophy, which goes each year to the national intercollegiate football champions.

According to A. L. Thompson, president of the 100 Percenters and housing expert, the North Florida institution was selected on the basis of its 1959 undefeated season of nine wins and no losses. Tennessee A & I State University, Nashville, with nine wins and one loss, was rated second team in the nation, while Prairie View A & M College, Texas, 8-1-0, was cited in third place.

In its 9-game season, Florida tallied 403 points against a total of 64 points for its opponents. Three of its victims, Benedict College, Columbia, S. C., Wiley College, Marshall, Texas, and Morris Brown College, Atlanta, Ga., played in that order at the beginning of the season, were scoreless.

In order, Florida was beating these schools 74-0, 64-0, and 6-0. Continuing the season, the "Rattlers" defeated, in order, Bethune-Cookman, Daytona Beach, Florida, 68-6, South Carolina State, Orangeburg, 54-12, North Carolina A & T, Greensboro, 28-16, Allen, Columbia, S. C., 52-8, Southern, Baton Rouge, La., 21-13, and Texas Southern, Houston, 36-8.

The 100 Per Cent Selections Committee is headed by Ralph Robinson, former director of athletics, Clark College, and an Atlanta, Ga. Scout executive, according to Mr. Thompson. Other members of the committee are Marion E. Jackson, sports editor, Atlanta Daily World, Joel Smith, sports authority and a member of the World's sports department, and William Nix, statistician and a member of the staff at Morehouse College.

Mr. Jackson, who is coordinator of The 100 Per Cent Wrong Club—a project of the Atlanta Daily World, adds that the 100 Percenters, on the occasion of their 25th anniversary, will select eleven persons deemed to have contributed most to sports during the last quarter of a century.

These announcements are expected to be made at an early date at which time the club will list its other honorees for 1959.

In the meantime, the 100 Per-centers announced that one of its All-Sports Jamboree sponsors, The Coca-Cola Company, with its bottlers at Brenham, Texas, and Miami, Fla., has put into competition players-of-the-game awards to be given out standing players from the Orange Blossom Classic featuring Florida A & M University and Prairie View A & M College at Miami.

The players awards are named for J. R. E. Lee, founder of the 27-year-old classic, who is vice president of Florida A & M University. The Coca-Cola Company, Atlanta, Ga., is sponsor of the Scott championship trophy of the 100 Per Cent group, while the Atlanta Life Insurance Company, Atlanta, Ga., is also a sponsor of the annual event. The Moss H. Kendrix Organization, Washington, D. C., handles public relations promotions for the jamboree.

The W. A. Scott, II, Memorial Trophy was put into competition in 1953 through The 100 Per Cent Wrong Club. The first trophy was retired last year by Prairie View A & M College which had three legs on the award, Florida A & M and Tennessee A & I each had two legs on the trophy, while Southern University, Grambling College, Grambling, La., and North Carolina State College at Durham each had one leg on the trophy.
