Full Text
"The High Tariffites in the Pennsylvania Legislature have introduced resolutions instructing their Senators against the present Democratic Tariff Law. The Democratic papers with few exceptions, we are glad to see, are taking strong ground against their passage, and are successful in showing that the law as it stands is good enough, even for the iron masters. The Pennsylvanian is earnest and eloquent in its defense. If indeed it be true, says that journal, that the sleek nobility of the furnace and the forge, who luxuriate almost in oriental magnificence at Newport and Saratoga, during every succeeding summer, are being ruined by the present Revenue Law,—how few, how very few, are they in number, to the overwhelming masses, whose highest interests demand that that law should not be amended by an increase of taxation upon industry and labor! Once open the door to a change against the principles of that law—once go back to the deserted path of bounties and bonuses—we care not how slight the change, or how trifling the receding,—and through the door thus opened will rush a host of injuries and immunities, until Toil is again oppressed by the burdens of obsolete usages, and markets now open to us in Europe are closed upon us irrevocably."
