The review and inspection of the militia in the county of Providence commenced with the first regiment, commanded by Col. Whiting, in Providence, on Monday the 5th inst. The battalion was drawn up at 10 o'clock, A. M. Col. Smith's company of light dragoons, Col. Fisher's artillery, and Col. Taylor's independent volunteers, on the right: The presence and co-operation of the officers and soldiers of the independent companies, excited in those of the battalion an emulation, which produced a degree of facility and precision of military evolutions unusual and highly honourable. Silence and subordination were observable, and an improvement in arms and accoutrements heretofore unparalleled. At half past 5, P. M. the regiment took up the line of march, and proceeded to the bridge, where the whole were dismissed. The other five regiments were reviewed and inspected in the course of the same week: The several chartered companies attached to the battalions displayed proofs of improvement and good conduct. The weather being remarkably pleasant, a variety of manoeuvres were performed much to the credit of the officers and soldiers of the brigade. An uncommon degree of military spirit animated every citizen in arms, who, with one voice and soul, pledged himself "to support a government, which protects life, liberty and property." The General, in his address to the regiments, called their attention to the important duties of American citizens in arms, and excited their ambition and patriotism by a reference to the examples of the great and illustrious WASHINGTON; assuring them "that efforts of imitating him, should eventually be crowned with a destiny as glorious and beatific." The spirit and ambition of the troops, their correctness in evolutions, their subordination and soldierlike behaviour, their improvement in arms and equipments, are sure and pleasurable proofs of future perfection in the military art.
