Full Text

The Mt. Vernon Union asks us to correct a statement which we copied the other day from the Democrat, of that place, relative to the valuation of personal property in Posey County. The Union says: The Democrat, in undertaking to give the comparative valuation of the personal property of this county, by townships, for 1868-9, arranges its figures in such a manner as to show that the increase over last year is but $9,772; whereas, the fact is, the increase is $101,805. By its showing, the personal property of this city has decreased $17,874 during the past year, when the fact is, it has increased $82,217. It would be of no earthly importance how badly it bungles its figures if nobody was deceived thereby but its own readers; but unfortunately, as in this case, its blunders obtain a wide publicity by being copied into papers having an extensive circulation in other sections of the country, and thereby creating the false and damaging impression abroad that our county is at a dead stand still, and our city fearfully retrograding in point of wealth.
