LETTER OF COMPLAINT TO TIMES' EDITOR
Dear Editor:
It seems to me high time that the attention of the city council should be forcibly brought to the condition of the streets of Union. The members of this body appear to be blind, where this matter is concerned, or utterly indifferent. It is a common saying that the roads of the county are in much better condition than the streets of the town, and this is the exact truth. The fact is, the streets of Union would be a disgrace to a community one-third its size.
The reply generally made, when the matter is mentioned to a member of the council, that there are no funds that can be used for this purpose. And yet, an incinerating plant has been recently bought and put up, at a cost of something like $4,000.00, which was not needed. If this money had been put on the streets, where it was sorely needed, it would have gone far towards putting them in at least passable condition.
In a short while, unless given attention, the macadamized portion of the streets will be in a condition similar to the macadamized road leading from Union to the Cedar Hill bridge. That, as you know, is now almost impassable. In places, the streets are almost as bad, even now, for all the fine gravel is being washed and worn off.
Public spirited citizens should see to it that the city council be made aware of the fact that the town is suffering and being injured by, the neglect of the public thoroughfares. The writer suggests the calling of a mass-meeting, where the subject may be discussed, and the council made aware of the sentiment of the community.
Citizen.
