Synod of Fife met in April last and appointed a Day of Fasting and Humiliation through their district due to burdens on the Church of Scotland from the Patronage Act not being removed. Synods of Perth and Stirling did the same in their districts. The day was observed solemnly by the people. Around the same time, a terrible earthquake occurred near Stirling and along Ochil Hills with two severe shocks in the forenoon and three more around midnight to 1 a.m., each with underground noise, damaging some houses and causing people to flee in fear.
