What Occurred at the Springs Yesterday—A Sermon in the Grove
Tents Struck—The Trip to Kansas City—Resolutions of Thanks.
Sunday morning opened pleasant at the Springs, and after roll call the "Craigs" breakfasted on broiled chicken at the Springs Hotel.
At eleven o'clock the people—soldiers, civilians and ladies—gathered together in the grove to hear Rev. A. D. Modrein, an eminent divine, Chaplain of the Craig and pastor of Central Old School Presbyterian Church, of Kansas City, preach.
The reverend gentleman took for his text II Heb., 10th verse, as follows:
"For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings."
He delivered an able discourse, which commanded the closest attention of the audience.
The ladies who accompanied the Craigs gave some very fine vocal music at the religious services, the Craig band playing an accompaniment.
After dinner Captain DuBois called the Company to order in the hallway of the hotel, and a committee was appointed to draft resolutions expressive of the sentiment of the Company.
The committee retired and in a short time returned, reported the following:
WHEREAS, The members of the Craig Rifle Company, of Kansas City, have enjoyed the hospitality of the proprietor of the Sweet Springs during a pleasant sojourn of two days at that place. Then be it
Resolved, That we tender to said proprietor our thankful acknowledgments, and that we pledge ourselves gratefully to remember the politeness which seems to have been extended personally to every member of the Company.
Resolved, That we embrace in this expression of our recognition of courtesies, the kindness and liberality which has been extended to us by the managers of the Missouri Pacific railroad. [Applause].
On motion the resolutions were unanimously adopted.
At four o'clock the Company boarded a special train on the Pacific and sped homeward, arriving in Kansas City at 8:10 p.m., the happiest mortals who ever faced broiled chicken at the Sweet Springs.
A Bazoo reporter cornered Captain DuBois, of the Craig Rifles, yesterday evening, and interviewed him as follows:
Reporter—Captain, will you tell the Bazoo readers how everything passed off at the Springs with you and your Company?
Captain—Yes, sir. The Company are all highly pleased with the Springs. As a place of resort for pleasure, it can't be beat in the West, as my men are very willing to attest. As for the health-giving qualities of those waters, we, as yet, are subject to the opinions of medical men and those who have tried them.
R.—Will you try and inform yourself as to the medical properties of the water?
Capt.—I am already informed, as I have an analysis of it.
R.—Then if any of the Craigs get sick, what?
Capt.—They shall go to the Springs and try it.
R.—The scenery at the Springs is truly beautiful.
Capt.—Yes, and our party are loud in their praise of everything and everybody. The Marmadukes, Mr. Huckins and everyone about the place vied with each other to see how much they could do to make us feel at home and to make our stay pleasant. Nothing but the pleasantest recollections cluster around the visit we have made.
R.—Now that the introduction is made, will not the people of Kansas City come often to this place?
Capt.—Yes. The people of Kansas City, as a mass, had no idea of the beauty and grandeur of this place, and will hereafter come often and stay long. The West will, as soon as it thoroughly learns this place, patronize it liberally, and it is only a question of time when thousands of people will be here during the heated term of each year.
R.—Where will the Company go for next encampment?
Capt.—That is hard to tell, but I expect that the Sweet Springs will catch them every year.
