HOLLYWOOD

She looked cute in her dress, the one that was the envy of high school girls in 1906. Her hair, done up beautifully in the style of that period, was cute too.

Her pet pup dropped a ball at her feet, and barked when she paid no attention.

The lovely Gloria De Haven was mute and on the verge of tears as she felt in her purse for a pencil and a piece of paper. For weeks she had been looking forward to playing opposite Mickey Rooney in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's "Summer Holiday," musical version of Eugene O'Neill's "Ah, Wilderness."

Scheduled to sing in a romantic scene with Mickey, Gloria instead was scribbling on a piece of paper.

She handed the note to Director Rouben Mamoulian.

It read:

"I've got laryngitis."
