Returning Reason.—The Hawkeye of yesterday, after stating that the editor of the Wisconsin Enquirer had hoisted the Tyler flag, thus acknowledges that he and his brother whigs made fools of themselves in 1840, by their song-singing processions, and hard cider carousals in Burlington:

'We have often smiled at the intense anxiety manifested by some Territorial Editors, who, it seemed, imagined that the whole weight of responsibility, as to who should and who should not be elected President of the United States, rested upon them and their efforts. We have even laughed at our own doings in 1840. But such hard cider and coonskin times don't occur once in a century, and we may therefore be excused for having participated in them so folly, and for having displayed such an intensity of feeling in behalf of old Tippecanoe, to say nothing of "Tyler too." But in these staid and glassy times, to see Territorial Editors attempting to get up a political excitement on the Presidential question—to see them rallying their forces—marshalling their political armies—directing how the orderly sergeants shall call the township rolls—how the captains shall muster and drill their men—how the majors their battalions—the colonels their regiments—the generals their divisions—and how and when the staff are to meet at Iowa City to go through the officers drill and report to the General, or commander-in-chief, of their political army—to see all this—and know that all this parade is made against undisciplined and raw militia who will not be drilled, and who can hardly be prevailed on to answer to their names when they are mustered—is truly laughable. And to know too, at the same time, that all this mustering is to show their attachment to and promote the election of the nominee of the Great Democratic Convention, by men who cannot command a single vote for President to save their lives—is absolutely hysterical.'

The editor reflects on the excessive and foolish Whig enthusiasm in the 1840 presidential campaign, including song-singing, processions, and hard cider celebrations for Harrison and Tyler, and contrasts it with the laughable, ineffective attempts by territorial Democratic editors to organize political support in the current election.
