Unknown Man, 50 Years Of Age, Fatally Shot Here

An unknown man, about 50 years old, was fatally shot late Saturday night by a policeman in the rear of 42 Hunter street, N.W. A pawn ticket found in the pocket of the dead man's coat revealed the name of William D. Vaughns.

Police records showed that the man attempted to burglarize the Economy Wholesale company at 12 West Hunter and made an effort to attack arresting officers with a hatchet and crowbar.

A burglar alarm in the building summoned a special officer to the scene of the burglar. He fired twice at the suspect but failed to rout him.

Officers Johnson and McCray of the Atlanta Police Department were called to the wholesale company to assist the special officer in the arrest. The former fired the fatal shot when the unknown man allegedly advanced on him with the iron instrument.

The body was removed to Grady hospital by a Pollard ambulance. A doctor pronounced the victim dead.
