Full Text

We must congratulate Mr. Blake for his splendid victory in the Third ward. We thought he ought not to have been elected, because he looked after oil and half dollars more than after the interests of the city, but the people of that ward and some from others who voted there, thought differently. We thought that Mr. Blake, when he drew $390 from the City Treasury for attending Council meetings, once a week, at a dollar a meeting, and committee meetings, at fifty cents a meeting, was going it rather steep on the city Treasury, but Mr. Blake's constituency by their votes said the other thing. Mr. Blake is heartily endorsed. He is authorized to go ahead and do as he has done, and a little more so if he desires. If he draws twice $390 from the city the next year his constituency will no doubt double his majority, and make it 406 majority instead of 203. After all there is an advantage in Mr. Blake's method of conducting elections. It infuses life amongst the voters, and brings them out to the polls. It makes them vote in all the districts of the ward. It makes them oblivious to any one but Blake. It is Blake all the time and Blake everywhere. The superiority of Mr. Blake's method over the old method is seen in a comparison of the vote cast at the last November election and that cast on Saturday. By the old method of voting but once 540 votes were cast for Cleveland, but by the Blake method put in operation on Saturday, 626 Democratic votes were polled, showing the superiority of the Blake machine over the honest plan by 86. Another advantage of the Blake plan is that honest voters in the ward who pay heavy taxes need not trouble themselves about voting. Mr. Blake obligingly gets the other men to do the voting who can be had for a very small consideration and who have plenty of time to do it, and the business men and tax payers can attend to their business in their offices and counting houses. Mr. Blake can go ahead. He has a right to take from the city all the half dollars he can lay hold of, because he is endorsed. We have only to say, go ahead Mr. Blake.
