The last Patriot retracts, in effect, all he has heretofore said against Gen. Duncan, and resolves at this time to "throw over all his faults the mantle of charity." The Editor intimates that he will give Gen. D. his support, and thinks all honest men, should go and do likewise. We did not expect this, though it has repeatedly been said in our hearing, that brother Edwards would be obliged to take the back track. Whatever may be thought of his former course, it is nothing to his discredit, being in the wrong, to retrace his steps and start again. We have not room for the "mantle of charity" now, but will present it to view hereafter.
The correspondent of the Journal is mistaken in saying, the contest for Governor is to be between Mr. McLaughlin and Mr. Kinney. Gen Duncan is now properly before the people as a candidate for that office. His name was announced in the last Whig; being unable to attend to our duties, the announcement was made without remark--perhaps none was necessary. Gen. D. has been induced to take this course both from the solicitations of friends and the ungenerous attempts of his enemies to frighten him out of the way of less deserving aspirants; and having fairly entered the contest, none acquainted with his character, will presume, that he will disappoint the wishes of the people by abandoning it.
A Bill has passed in the Legislature of Indiana, incorporating a State Bank. The bank is to have a capital of $1,600,000, with ten branches. Last winter the same measure failed; a large majority of both Houses of the present Legislature were in favor of it.
Mr McDuffie of the House of Representatives has been appointed a Major General by the Legislature of South Carolina.
An error or two escaped us in our print of Gen. Duncan's letter last week, which obscure the sense, or rather turn it into nonsense. In the 5th paragraph, 2d line, for "institution;" read "insinuation," in the 9th paragraph, 7th line, for "approbation," read "appropriation."
