Full Text
A Sergeant M'Leod, distinguished for his integrity and soldiership, who had made arms his profession from the cradle, and had served in the ranks under Gen. Washington, was on the sick list; and unable to mingle in the honours and respects of the day; offered to the memory of his Chief. When the battalion, in return, approached the grand parade, it broke into quick-time, with the accustomed air of 'So went the merry man home to his grave:'—at this instant a shot was heard in one of the huts, and it was soon known that poor M'Leod was no more!—In the prime of life, sound of mind, in a state of convalescence, and beloved by all ranks, this meritorious veteran fell a victim to a momentary impulse of sensibility, which prostrated the powers of reason,—Poor M'Leod! the sensible and the humane will drop a tear to thy memory!
