What is this article about?
In Tennessee, approximately 200 votes were cast directly for Polk and Dallas in two precincts but not counted due to procedural error, suggesting a majority for Polk over Clay; however, the state's electoral vote went to Clay. This could have decided the presidency if New York had voted for Clay.

The Pennsylvanian says: 'It is stated that there were cast in two precincts in Tennessee about two hundred votes for Polk and Dallas directly, without the intervention of electors. These were of course not counted, but the fact shows that a majority of the voters of Tennessee were for Mr. Polk, in preference to Mr. Clay. Had New York voted for Clay, these two hundred votes would have decided the presidency!'
As the above paragraph has been going the rounds of the newspapers for several weeks, and we believe has not been contradicted, we conclude that the facts are as therein stated, and that a majority of the votes given in Tennessee were given for Polk and Dallas—yet the vote of the State was cast for Clay, in consequence of a mere formal error of 200 voters.
