Subsidy For V. I.
Rum Supported

Governor Gordon and members of the Legislature met yesterday with Ralph Paiewonsky and Gordon Skeoch, local rum manufacturers, to discuss their proposal for an immediate subsidy for the rum industry to prevent its collapse due to the heavy increase in the price of molasses. A $150,000 contribution for the next fiscal year was proposed.

The conferees generally agreed that action should be taken to assist the rum manufacturers, whose products give the islands most of their revenues in the form of internal revenue taxes returned to the island's treasury by the Federal Government.

After a two-hour long conference, it was agreed that a committee composed of three members of the legislature, three administration officials and the two distillers should be named to study the problem and to submit definite proposals. Senators Merwin, Hodge and Ottley were appointed to that committee. The administration representatives will be named later.
