School Enrollment
In Penns Grove
It Shows Crowded Conditions In Rooms And Too Much Congestion In High School Building
A few citizens are seeking information about Penns Grove school, while a big majority appear unconcerned about the election for a new school house next Monday evening. Below shows the enrollment of pupils.
High School
High School Scholars ......318 3
Grammar School
Total in High School Bldg, 437
In Grammar School Bldg....616 71
In Poland Building 122 20
The above figures give a foundation for consideration of the crowded condition of pupils. Forty to a room is the normal number.
As To The Grounds
The Sack land is high and has good drainage with cement walks on Sack Avenue and State Street to it. It is central and most of the children will not have to cross Broad and Main St. at Union Corner. It will remove the congestion at North Broad and Harmony Streets.
Ten years ago the people voted to buy all the land from Beach Avenue to the drain ditch and between State St. to the Railroad for $4,000 but the Board refused to do so. That failure will cost Penns Grove Borough $100,000.
Voting for the Sack land now will partly remedy the mistake.
The Barber land out East Harmony Street, is 1,000 feet from North Broad and at the extreme east edge of the Borough. While it is a larger tract and the first cost less, in the future for grading, drainage and cement walks to keep the children out of the mud will cost $5,000 more in a few years.
A ditch to drain a pond in John A. Featherer's field runs thru the tract and it is so low in parts that meadow bull rushes grow on it, making it unprofitable to grow crops.
Most of the children will have to pass Broad and Harmony, making the same congestion which will grow with years.
