UNITED STATES SENATE.—In this body, as it stands at present, there is a decided majority of those who supported Mr. Van Buren for the Presidency. The parties may be divided as follows:
The following commentary on this statement we find in the Philadelphia United States Gazette:
WILL THEY OBEY?—We have by way of request a word to the Raleigh Register, the Louisville Journal, and the principal paper in Indiana, viz:—that they will, when fully informed of the results of the elections, publish an exact account of the votes in each of the Congressional districts of their respective States. We ask this for purposes of reference. But another good might result from such a tabular expose of the recent votes in two of these States, as well as from Ohio, Georgia, New Jersey, and Tennessee, viz: the Van Buren Senators from these States who are stout brawlers for the doctrine of instruction, might have the privilege of resigning their places, or of voting in accordance with the expressed will of a majority of their constituents.
North Carolina will give a majority of some thousands against V. Buren in her Congressional vote this season, and she has two Van Buren Senators in Congress.
Tennessee has one U. S. Senator for Van Buren, Mr. Grundy, and she gives twenty thousand majority against Van Buren.
Indiana has an incalculable majority—electing no Van Buren man to Congress—and has one Van Buren Senator, Mr. Tipton.
Georgia, at her last vote, gave about three thousand majority against Mr. Van Buren, and she has two Van Buren Senators.
New Jersey is altogether Anti-Van Buren, and she has one Van Buren Senator, Mr. Wall, who is so consistent in his course, as to have voted for Mr. Granger as Vice President last winter, in conformity with the wishes of his State.
Ohio returned eleven Anti-Van Buren members of Congress out of nineteen, and gave six thousand majority against Van Buren, and has two Van Buren Senators. They can return or turn.
If these nine Senators who are so earnest in their defence of the right of instruction, and who have called upon others to obey, would resign their seats, or vote according to the decision of a large majority of the people of their respective States, the conservatives, the true friends of the country, would have a majority in the Senate of the United States. Let us see whether they are willing to follow their own precepts.
