Dunn To Play Erwin There Wednesday

Although Harnett County baseball teams are taking an Easter open date today, a light schedule will be resumed tomorrow when Dunn meets Erwin in Erwin, and a somewhat heavier slate is scheduled for Thursday when the remainder of the teams play.

The game in Erwin tomorrow will probably decide the Harnett County Conference baseball championship of the season. So far this year both teams have successfully downed all opposition and each has yet to lose.

Erwin has victories over Coats, Angier, Anderson Creek, Lillington and Benhaven in the conference and Linden in a non-conference game.

The Dunn boys hold wins over Boone Trail, Buie's Creek, LaFayette and Anderson Creek-all in the conference.

The Dunn boys have compiled a good record so far this year, but Erwin should undoubtedly furnish the stiffest opposition in the county and it has been generally conceded that the county championship should go to one of these two teams- barring numerous upsets.

As a team the Greenwaves are batting a .352 average, which is pretty good for a high school organization, and the pitching has improved as the season has progressed.

William Corbett leads the mound staff-which is composed of himself and Fleming Glover unless Daley Goff is called in from shortstop to relieve-with three victories and no defeats. He has given up eighteen hits in 21 innings, struck out 12 and given up 12 bases on balls.

Glover has credit for the other two wins although he did not need help from Goff at Coats. Little "Red" tossed a three-hitter his first start but suffered an almost complete reversal of form in his second. All total, he has pitched 12 innings, given up 14 hits, struck out six, and given up six bases on balls.

HERMAN GODWIN LEADS

Herman Godwin is currently leading the Greenwave offense with a batting average of .596, a rise of 162 points over his last week's average. Godwin has collected 10 hits in 19 trips to be the only Dunn boy hitting over .500. Eight of these were singles and the other two doubles. He is third in RBIs with five.

Bobby Godwin, who has seen only limited action this season because he started baseball late this year, is batting an even .500 but he has only been to the plate for two tries. He hit into a fielder's choice his first time and tripled his second.

E. B. Dixon, the second sacker, is placing third with a .467 average.

He is second in RBIs with six.

And Dickie Surles, the fleetfooted centerfielder, rounds out those hitting above .400 with a .409 average.

His hits include two home runs and he leads in RBIs with eight.

Dickie Surles leads in extra base hits with four, which includes the lead in home runs (2) and a tie for the lead in two base hits with Herman Godwin. Each has two.

Daley Goff and Robert Pope have also doubled. Mac Turlington and Bobby Godwin share the lead in triples as they each have one and nobody else has garnered a three base hit. Herman Godwin leads in singles with eight. Bobby Godwin has the highest slugging average, which is based on the total bases in times at bat, with a 1.500 average. Of those that have gone to bat ten times or more, Dickie Surles leads in the slugging department with a .773 average.

Wednesday-Dunn at Erwin.

Thursday-Boone Trail at LaFayette; Benhaven at Anderson Creek; Buie's Creek at Coats; Lillington at Angier.

Friday-Dunn at Salemburg.
