D. Adv.

Mr. Gerry's late letter to Gov. Hancock, says a correspondent, reflects the brightest honor on his political, as well as moral, character. His Fellow-citizens, fully apprized of his sentiments in the late General Convention, which were opposed to the new system, were so convinced of his abilities and integrity, as to elect him one of their Federal Representatives; and that statesman, whose patriotism has induced him to comply with their wishes in opposition to his private opinion, has accepted the office. It may therefore be presumed, that his judgment, uninfluenced by an enthusiastic prepossession in favour of the new government, will enable him clearly to discern its benefits & defects. The proof of moderation, which he has already exhibited, is a pledge of his future equanimity; and the union as well as his more immediate constituents, ought to exult in the possession of this truly illustrious patriot.
It has been justly said, that the light of truth is best obtained from a collision of sentiments; and as the faculties of the human mind are progressive, a spirit of disquisition ought rather to be encouraged, than repressed. Were we even assured, that the new constitution is the best which could have been formed for us, still, as it is to be administered by men, we ought to inspect every part of it with the most minute attention; to restrain the powers, which it conveys, where exorbitant; to strengthen them, where weak; and above all to beware, that the rights of the people be not injured, or left insecure.
