FROM A LONDON PAPER.
SUPERSTITION
It is an awful and lamentable fact, that in India, the practice of widows devoting themselves to death, on the decease of their husbands, is rather on the increase than the decline. It has been officially announced by the magistrates of Bengal, that in that British Presidency alone (out of the three into which our dominions in India are divided) in the year 1815 there were between 5 and 600; in 1816, 600; and in 1817, 706 instances of women being voluntarily burnt or buried alive with the bodies of their husbands!
