Extract of a Letter from Longford, in Ireland, December 1.

Miss N-, a Lady of large Fortune near the County Town of Longford in Ireland, whose Ancestors had represented that County in Parliament, was addressed by several Gentlemen, and among others by one Mr. J-n, who had just left the University; who, not meeting with such a Return as he hoped for, took the rash Resolution to carry off the young Lady by Force. An alarming Attempt or two of that Sort obliged her, by Way of Safety, to go to Longford, to one of her Guardians, Mr. W-r, at whose House she thought herself secure; but soon after her Removal, Mr. J-n, at Noon, and on the Market Day, accompanied by seventeen other Men armed, entered suddenly into Mr. W-r's House, bound him fast, seized on the young Lady, and forced her on Horseback, crying in vain for Help in the Midst of some Hundred Spectators. When the Accomplices of J-n thought the Lady secured, one of them unbound Mr. W-r, who taking instantly a Brace of Pistols, pursued them, and seeing J-n at the End of the Street, fired at him and killed him on the Spot. One of J-n's Companions then presented a Piece at Mr. W-r, whose Son coming up at that Period, with a Blunderbuss, fired it in his Father's Defence, and with the same fatal Effect. The rest, seeing their Leaders fall, abandoned the young Lady, who was under the most dreadful Alarm; and Mr. W-r and his Son are now under Prosecution by Mr. J-n's Friends, and are to take their Trials at the next Assizes.
