Class Honors
The graduation exercises of the Northampton Accomack Memorial Hospital School of Nursing was held at the Franktown Methodist Church Friday, February 27 at eight p. m. This was the first class to graduate since the re-opening of the school in February 1945. The eight graduates were: Miss Peggy Ann Burton, Wachapreague, Virginia; Miss Doris Lee Edwards, Onancock, Virginia; Miss Joyce Mae Holland, Cape Charles, Virginia; Miss Helen Wilds Mathews, Temperanceville, Virginia; Miss Ann Councilor Orton, Nassawadox, Virginia; Miss Betty Sue Rosser, Sanford, North Carolina; Mrs. Elizabeth Sturgis, Eastville, Virginia; Miss Irene Cordelia Turner, Concord Wharf, Virginia.
Dr. W. Carey Henderson, chairman of the training school committee, presided. Dr. C. O. Tuttle, Pastor of the Cape Charles Methodist Church, delivered the address of the evening. The Cape Charles Lions Club Quartet rendered two selections "The Lost Chord" by Sullivan and "Remember Now Thy Creator" by Charles B. Adams. Miss Peggy Burton read the class history as written by Miss Ann Orton, President of the Senior Class.
Awards were presented by Mrs. Pauline Rinker Wescott, educational director, to Mrs. Elizabeth Sturgis for the best average in theory for the three years, and to Miss Irene Turner, who was chosen the best bedside nurse. This prize was an anonymous gift and the prize to Mrs. Sturgis was given by the auxiliary to the Medical Societies of Northampton and Accomac counties. Dr. W. J. Sturgis, Sr., President of the Board of Trustees delivered the diplomas and the school pins were presented by Miss Evelyn M. Heath, Superintendent of the Hospital and Directress of Nurses. The Reverend Charles Bright, Pastor of Franktown Church, gave the invocation and benediction.
A reception was held after the exercises for the relatives and friends of the graduates in the Alathea building at the Church.
