NEW YORK—(ANP)— Democratic politicians here have been discussing the advisability of sponsoring a woman candidate against Congressman A. Clayton Powell, if the fiery young minister decides to seek reelection next year.
The Associated Negro Press learned of this last week when Mrs. Mary McLeod Bethune, one of America's most famous leaders, arrived in the city to register for the Nov. 4 election.
Friends of the educator and former government official hinted that she had been approached on the candidate for public office subject by political aides of Mayor William O'Dwyer but had not given them any definite answer.
It is understood that Mrs. Bethune is registered from the home of Mrs. Marian Anderson Pratt, heart of the thickly populated 11th Assembly district, and is enrolled as a Democrat.
Two other women leaders from Harlem, Mrs. Edith Alexander and Atty. Ruth Whitehead Whaley, have been mentioned in these political discussions it was also learned, but apparently have not been told about it.
"I have no public office aspirations," Mrs. Alexander told newsmen, and about all I can say is that it really is news to me,
