Full Text
The degeneracy in public morals in our cities is abundantly indicated in the vitiated taste of theatre goers. The New York World says that very few theatrical houses are making money, that many have failed since the season began, and that more failures will follow; while, on the other hand, variety houses are doing better business than ever. And another writer declares that there never has been a time when the legitimate performances of the stage received so little encouragement, and when the perversions of the art were so largely sustained.
