CAN'T BE FOOLED
MAJOR MOORHOUSE TRIES SUCCESSFUL EXPERIMENT.
Local Employe of Uncle Sam Knows His Patrons as They Are or Disguised—Delivers Card Correctly to Young Lady Whose Picture Is Given in Place of Address, Although in Masquerade Clown Costume—Major Moorhouse Satisfied.
That the Pendleton postal employes are fully alive and are not to be exceeded by their metropolitan brothers is shown by a stunt just performed by one of the local carriers.
One day last week the Oregonian contained an illustrated story telling how an astute postman had delivered a letter which for an address had nothing but a young lady's photo with the word "For" and an arrow pointing to the picture.
To see if the Pendleton postmen could not do even better, Major Lee Moorhouse sent a postal photo card through the local office yesterday. It was the picture of two well known young ladies in the masquerade costumes they wore at a party last winter.
They were dressed as clowns and their usual bewitching faces were wholly concealed behind hideous masques made out of white stockings.
On the other side of the card the major wrote: "To be delivered to either of the young ladies pictured on the other side."
When the card was first picked up by the mailing clerk the force was sorely "stumped" and had it not been for timely assistance given by the young ladies at the windows the reputation of the office would likely have gone glimmering.
But upon their advice, Clarence Roach, ever a most chivalrous mail carrier, set forth and a little later tendered the card to Miss Carrie Burton, who smilingly admitted it was for her.
The picture was of herself and her friend, Miss Laura Wyrick.
"Pendleton is hard to beat," said Major Moorhouse, when he learned of the success with which his scheme worked.
"In Portland they could hardly find a young lady when they had her real picture to go by, but here the postmen find them when disguised."
