OUR UNCLE SAMUEL
He Talks About the Future.
New York, Nov. 3.-It was 1:40 o'clock this morning when the last torchbearer filed past Gov. Tilden, Mr. John Kelly, Grand Marshal Brennan, Lieut. Gov. Dorsheimer, Mr. August Belmont, Royal Phelps, and the other distinguished gentlemen who occupied the reviewing stand in front of the Everett House. Then the great mass, probably 50,000 in number, surged up until the calcium lights reflected a perfect sea of upturned faces. A mighty cheer rose upon the air. Gov. Tilden advanced, removed his hat, and said:
Gentlemen, and fellow citizens.
We have just witnessed a magnificent pageant. It is not a compliment to me; it is an expression of
THE POPULAR WILL
in behalf of reform. These thousands of marching patriots, this glitter and this enthusiasm, mean something more than mere display. It means that people speak for reform. This grand demonstration is a harbinger of success. Do your duty on Tuesday next as nobly as you have done it to-night. Our success means
PEACE, RECONCILIATION AND FRATERNITY
among all our people, of every class and race. It means national credit founded on a solid basis; a united people, a frugal administration, and an honest and just government. It will bring a reduction of one half of one per cent. in the interest on the bonded national indebtedness below the lowest rate at which any loan has been negotiated, which, in a period of 38 years, would save to the people $350,000,000 of the $700,000,000 proposed to be issued at 4 per cent. It would mean giving fair play to the healing influences of nature in the restoration of
OUR BUSINESS AND INDUSTRIES,
to prosperity which bad administrations have impaired and for a time destroyed.
Fellow citizens, I thank you for your attention. We have witnessed a pageant which strikes dismay to the vision of our enemies. Now let us go to our homes, labor with our doubting neighbors and on Tuesday next do our duty as good citizens.
Gentlemen, good night.
