LaVerne Zavala and Marilyn Ingle Heard In Brilliant Piano Recital Monday

From every standpoint, the piano recital given Monday night by Marilyn Ingle and LaVerne Zavala, students of Ruth Teeple Reid, was one of the most successful in the history of the studio. The young artists were assisted by Lenora Costello and Donald Zavala, with Mrs. Margaret Rau as accompanist in one group. The recital took place in the studio, 523 Holt avenue.

The two pianists evidenced a splendid technical foundation which enabled them to play with ease and assurance and with beautiful quality of tone and brilliance of performance.

For their opening number the two pianists played the "Allegro" movement of the Mozart Sonata in C minor, the second piano arrangement being made by Edouard Grieg. This number was played in the restrained, true Mozart style.

Assisting Artist

Lenora Costello was then presented in three songs which gave her ample scope in which to project the lovely quality and timbre of her voice, the audience being most enthusiastic perhaps over her singing of "Take Me, Janie Dear" (Bischoff).

LaVerne Zavala was next presented in a solo group, playing two brilliant numbers by the German composers of the romantic school: "Etude Mignon" (Schuett), "Impromptu in C Sharp Minor" (Rachmaninoff). In both these compositions the young pianist demonstrated her technical facility.

Marilyn Ingle followed with "The Soaring" (Schumann), "Autumn" (Chaminade) and "Shadow Dance" (MacDowell), all played with brilliance and assurance.

Oboe Solos

Don Zavala made his first appearance as a solo oboist that evening, playing the "Tarantella" and the "Pastorale" by Labate to the great enjoyment of his audience.

Marilyn Ingle was next presented in three violin solos: "Adoration" (Borowski), "Meditation" from "Thais" (Massenet) and an especial arrangement of "Song of India" by Fritz Kreisler. Marilyn has made great progress with her violin work this past year as her performance proved.

LaVerne Zavala was then heard in a second piano group: "Creole Dance" (Chaminade) and the "Praeludium" from the "First Suite" (MacDowell).

Closing Numbers

The concert closed with a two piano arrangement by David Guion of the folk song "Turkey in the Straw" and the Ravina "Serenade" arranged by the composer for the two pianos. During the program there were constant demands for encores which could not be granted due to the length of the concert. A recording of the Ravina number was made to be included in the studio library.

The concert was really a gala event, the house being filled with flowers sent to the young artists, gifts sent to them also being on display. Mrs. Reid presented Don Zavala, Lenora Costello and Mrs. Rau with gifts in appreciation of their help in making the concert a success.

Mothers of the young artists served refreshments after the recital.
