DISTRESSING NEWS.

Letters from officers of the United States' ship Hornet, Captain Read, dated at the Island of Bonavista, the 27th of August last, confirm the melancholy tidings of the death of all the persons, save one only, composing the American Colonization Company's People of Colour, at Sherbro, on the coast of Africa. They had fallen victims to the climate, and the unhealthiness of the place where they located. The Hornet stayed only four days at Sierra Leone; and Captain R. thought it most prudent not to proceed to Sherbro. The Hornet saw the Cyane at Teneriffe, all pretty well. She (the Cyane) intended returning to the coast after the rainy season.—A boat's crew of hers, commanded by Mr. J. S. Townsend, Midshipman, all shared the sad fate of Mr. Bacon, and his colony, at Sherbro.

The Hornet, after a cruise among the West-India islands, is to return home.
