LET US DROP PATERSON.
From Newark Advertiser.
There is no love lost between
Paterson and Passaic. It is
true, also, that the other muni-
cipalities in the Passaic Valley
do not hold Paterson in any
great esteem, that municipality
being a sort of Ishmaelite
among the cities and towns of
East Jersey. How much this is
due to the peculiar character of
Paterson journalism it is hard
to say. Passaic is Paterson's
nearest neighbor, and being
under the same county govern-
ment, is brought in close con-
tact with the larger municipali-
ty. Their county relations have
always been discordant. The
Paterson papers are comment-
ing in their characteristic way
on these relations. The Press
says explanatorily:
"We have no desire to see Pas-
saic kicked out of the county.
We simply recognize a condi-
tion, that has plainly existed for
years and still exists. in that
city. It is a feeling of anti-
pathy to Paterson which makes
the relations of the two cities
strained and uncomfortable
politically. financially and in
many other ways. We hold
that unless this condition can
be removed or ameliorated it
would be better to part com-
pany."
The suggestion that the city
of Passaic should go with Essex
county would doubtless be fa-
vored by her citizens. Passaic
county has an area of about 20
square miles. of which about 3%
square miles are in Passaic city
Essex county has an area of
about 130 square miles. The
difference in territory would
not be much by the change.
Passaic city would find more
congenial municipal company
in Essex. and its annexation
would be of great advantage
both to city and county. The
ties between Newark and Pas-
saic. which have always been
sympathetic, would be brought
closer for their mutual benefit.
If put on a vote Passaic would
drop Paterson by a large ma-
jority.
