'Swarm's' from Massachusetts.

No State in the Union—not even South Carolina—has done more to precipitate the country into its present horrors than Massachusetts, and no State enlisted under the banner of the Union has done less towards averting the consequences so wantonly and persistently provoked by that State.

With the patriotic bluster of Massachusetts the country has long been familiar. Her patriotic practices may be inferred from the following returns of the late draft compiled from the recent message of Gov. Andrew:

Whole number required under the draft 32,087.

Exempted for cause shown 32,343.

Failed to report 3,044.

Commuted for $300 3,622.

Substitutes 2,335.

Held to service 753.

32,087.

Thus out of a call for 32,087 men, Massachusetts, the bright exemplar of loyalty and patriotic devotion, contributed the paltry number 743 recruits.
